The Hon Clare Martin MLA

Clare was elected to the NT Legislative Assembly in 1995, becoming Opposition Leader in 1999 and, after a victory few pundits predicted, the Chief Minister in 2001. She was both the first female and first Labor Party candidate to win this office. Reforms during her term included repealing of controversial mandatory sentencing laws and introduction of freedom of information legislation.

Clare led her team to another election victory before resigning as Chief Minister in 2007. In 2010 she returned to the Northern Territory to become a Professorial Fellow in the Public and Social Policy Research Institute at Charles Darwin University.
