The favourite word in middle Australia at the moment is 'village'. Everybody wants to live in a village. Every retirement community is now called a village, and high-rise buildings now being called vertical villages. And that reflects a deep concern about the degeneration of community life around Australia -- a deep yearning to get back in touch with each other.
